When an AC starts struggling to kick on - especially when the heat is at its worst - that's not something you ignore. We got called out for a cooling system diagnostic on a Lennox unit, and we came prepared to get to the bottom of it.

Part of a thorough HVAC system diagnostic means checking more than just the obvious stuff. We pulled amperage readings with our clamp meter and inspected the electrical components inside the unit. What we found wasn't pretty - the capacitor connections were heavily caked in debris and lint buildup, which puts serious strain on the system every time it tries to start.

That's where a hard-start kit comes in. It gives the compressor an extra boost of power right at startup, reducing the electrical strain that builds up over time. It's a small component, but it makes a real difference in how reliably a system kicks on - and in how long the compressor lasts. Skipping this kind of fix is one of the fastest ways to turn a minor repair into a full system replacement.

We also swapped out the air filters during the visit. Fresh carbon filters mean the system isn't working harder than it has to just to pull air through - better airflow, better efficiency, cleaner air inside the home. It's one of those easy wins that a lot of people overlook until something bigger breaks.

Little fixes handled at the right time keep systems running the way they should. A diagnostic visit like this covers all the things you can't see from the outside, and it catches problems before they turn into emergencies.
