When a system stops cooling, the worst thing you can do is guess. A lot of homeowners end up paying for a refrigerant recharge or a new part - only to find out that wasn't even the problem. A proper diagnostic visit changes that completely.

Here's what a thorough no-cooling call actually looks like. We start at the outdoor units and work our way through the whole system. Two condensers side by side means two separate systems to evaluate - and each one tells its own story. We check electrical components, look at the control boards, and read the fault codes the system is already storing. The Comfort Alert diagnostics module is a great example of this. It monitors compressor behavior and logs specific fault codes - locked rotor, open circuit, pressure trips, short cycling - so we're not just poking around hoping to find something. The system is already pointing us to the problem.

From there, we pull refrigerant pressures with a Fieldpiece SMAN manifold gauge. This gives us real data on how the system is actually performing - suction pressure, discharge pressure, subcooling, superheat. Those numbers tell us whether the refrigerant charge is off, whether the compressor is doing its job, or whether something else is limiting capacity. No guessing, no assumptions.

We also check the thermostat side of things. A Nest running in cooling mode and actively calling for cooling rules out a control or wiring issue at the stat - which is actually a more common culprit than most people expect. It's a quick check that either confirms the stat is fine or immediately redirects our focus. That's the value of a structured diagnostic approach - you eliminate possibilities fast instead of chasing symptoms.
