Two issues. One visit. That's what this call came down to - a clogged condensate drain line and a filter that was long overdue for a swap. On the surface, neither one sounds like a big deal. But left alone, both of them can cause real problems fast.
The drain pan situation was bad. Standing water, rust staining, and buildup that had clearly been sitting for a while. When a condensate drain line gets clogged, the water your AC pulls out of the air has nowhere to go. It backs up into the pan, and if it overflows, you're looking at water damage to ceilings, drywall, or flooring - none of which is cheap to fix. We cleared the line and got drainage moving the way it's supposed to.
The filter was the other half of the job. The old one was completely caked - dark, matted, and blocking airflow. A dirty filter makes your system work harder to pull air through, which puts extra strain on the blower and can cause the evaporator coil to ice over. We swapped it out with a clean one to get airflow back to where it needs to be.
These two things together - a blocked drain and a choked filter - are exactly the kind of combination that quietly wears a system down. The unit keeps running, but it's struggling the whole time. Catching it early is what keeps a minor maintenance call from turning into a major repair bill.
Regular HVAC maintenance is the best way to stay ahead of stuff like this. If your system has been acting up, making noise, or you just can't remember the last time it was looked at, it's worth getting eyes on it before the problem gets bigger.
