Two of the most overlooked services in HVAC maintenance are condenser coil cleaning and capacitor replacement. They don't get talked about much - but they're responsible for a lot of the AC problems homeowners deal with every summer. Weak airflow, the unit running constantly, or the system just not keeping up with the heat. Usually, it traces back to one of these two things.
On this job, we opened up the Trane condenser unit and got to work on the coil. Over time, dirt, dust, and debris pack into those fins and block airflow. When that happens, the system can't release heat properly, so it works harder, runs longer, and wears itself out faster. A thorough coil cleaning clears all of that out and lets the unit breathe again.
We also replaced a worn capacitor. The capacitor is what gives the compressor and fan motor the electrical boost they need to start up and keep running. When it starts to fail, you'll notice the unit struggling to kick on, or it might run but not cool like it should. Swapping it out is a straightforward fix - but catching it before it completely fails is what saves you from a full breakdown in the middle of a heat wave.
These two services together make a real difference in how well your system performs. Better heat transfer from the cleaned coil, more reliable startup from the new capacitor. The unit runs more efficiently, and you're not burning through extra electricity just to stay comfortable. Small services like these are exactly how you protect a system and get more years out of it before a full replacement becomes necessary.
If your AC is struggling to keep up or you just haven't had any maintenance done in a while, this is the kind of work worth scheduling sooner rather than later. A little attention now goes a long way toward avoiding a much bigger repair bill down the road.
